In the 1977 coup, the arrest of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, his ministers and the leaders of the PPP led to Pakistan’s most strict martial law instated by Chief of Army Staff General Zia-ul-Haq who then stayed in power for 11 years. Zia’s tenure saw the country go through Islamisation and involvement with the Afghan mujahideen in America’s war against the Soviets in Afghanistan.
